Jon Rykken Bretag, 66, of Yuma, died Nov. 13, 2012, in Yuma.

Born Sept. 1, 1946, in Chicago, he was a machinist and veteran of the U.S. Navy.

No local services will be held. Sunset Vista Funeral Home is handling arrangements, including cremation.

Jon R. Bretag age 66 passed from this life November 13, 2012. Born September 1, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, Jon R. Bretag was the second child of Gerald and Lois Bretag. Along with his older sister Andrea McDonald he was reared in Germany and Albuquerque where his father worked as a U.S. Civil servant and mother as a registered nurse.

Jon R. Bretag was preceded in death by his parents and he is survived by his wife Nancy and sons Todd and Leon Bretag, four grandchildren, and one great grand daughter.

Jon R. Bretag served our Nation honorably with the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman, during an 18 month tour in Vietnam with the 5th Marine Regiment. Among other awards and citations he received a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and Presidential Unit Citation. Jon R. Bretag was medically retired after 14 years of service as 1st Class Petty Officer.

Following his military service, Jon R. Bretag worked as a mechanist until he retired. He provided service to his community assisting terminally ill Veterans with palliative care. Jon R. Bretag enjoyed competitive target shooting and participated in the Cowboy Shooting Competitions, and he will be remembered as an honest trustworthy friend by those who know and knew him well.

In lieu of flowers donations to Humane Society of Yuma are requested by the family.
