Charles N. Maguire

Charles N. Maguire, or Chuck as he much preferred, passed away on the evening of August 22, 2021,
surrounded by his children and the songs of the Beach Boys.

Chuck was born in Harford, CT, but liked to say that he convinced his parents to move to Albuquerque when he was 8 months old. He attended Highland High School and ENMU before ultimately graduating with his degree in Architecture from UC Berkeley. He was an avid sports fan (any sport), but his true love was always tennis. He was the Head Tennis Pro at the Tennis Club of Albuquerque for ten years before retiring in 1981. He then began his second career in residential design which continued for the rest of his life. Playing tennis and going to TCA for matches with friends or brother Dick were the highlights of Chuck's week. Chuck spent his entire life in Albuquerque living in the Netherwood Park neighborhood, serving on the association board and absolutely
loved celebrating the 4th of July holiday at the park.

Chuck follows his parents Norman and Polly Maguire and son Craig Price. He is survived by wife Carol, son Garret Price, daughters Missy Igel and Katie Penn, grandchildren Rachel, Amelie, Boban, Mila, Rylan and Keegan, brother Dick Maguire and sisters Marilyn Loser and Susie Garcia.

Chuck was a kind and gentle soul and a friend to all; he never met a stranger. He will be missed tremendously by his family and many, many friends. In lieu of flowers, we know Chuck would love donations to support the New Mexico Youth Tennis Foundation: 2901 Indian School NE, Ste A, Alb, NM 87106 or http://www.nnmta.usta.com/nmytf/

Patricia and I send out our most sincere condolences to Chuck's wife, children, and family.  Chuck and I grew up on Columbia Street along with my brothers and Rick Senter. We played football with the neighborhood kids...Bill,Chris,and Fred Cooksey...Rick Senter....my brother Mike and others.  We attended Montezuma Elemenrary....Jefferson Jr. Hi....and HHS together. Many fond memories of our neighborhood kids playing sports together. I remember in 6th grade going to Chuck's birthday party which culminated in seeing the " The Blob" at Kimo Theatre. We connected again at 1990 HHS Reunion at La Cueva Country Club and tallked of old times. In 2017 he came to "Family and Friends" Breakfast Annual Reunion at Manny's Restaurant on Central and Girard. We shared "Old Times' and sat together telling stories and reminicing.

Blessings to McGuire Family!

I remember a bunch of us used to gather at Chuck's after school.  I seem to remember it being in his basement, but it was a long time ago and someone may well remember that Chuck didn't have a basement.  We'd listen to music and talk.  Chuck (and his folks) were always welcoming.  I hadn't spoken with Chuck since high school, but I got a note from him not too many months ago, suggesting we re-connect.  The note came from Charles Maguire, and I wrote back saying I'd love to ... and did he still go by Chuck?  I never heard back, but I suspect that this is the reason.  My condolences to his family.  He was a good man, and I'll miss him.

I fondly remember Chuck from Jefferson and as well as Highland and was very envious of his incredible tennis skills.  Sincere condolences to his wife and family!

I was sad to read of Chuck’s death and the loss for his family.

Chuck was wonderful to know, we played tennis together at Highland and Eastern New Mexico University.  We arrived at Eastern not really sure what the place was all about. Chuck quickly made friends in his dorm and around campus, being the friendly person Chuck was. A number of friends he had at Eastern were  from east of Mississippi River, so going home for the weekend was not possible for them, Chuck would bring to the “big city” to stay at his parent’s home and get out of Portales(where ENMU was located).

The second year we were there our tennis team won the NAIA regional tennis championship and the right to play in the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City where we played doubles together.  For us it was a big deal to play in Kansas City and a national championship.

After Chuck’s second year at ENMU with high grades he did something brave, transfer to Cal Berkeley, from sleepier Portales (there were no stop lights in Portales) to the most happening place in the 60’s Berkeley where he did well.

Chuck was the consummate tennis teacher at the Albuquerque Tennis Club.  He stayed up to date with the latest methods for teaching tennis. He played tennis left handed but leaned to teach tennis right handed, being most of the people he was teaching were right handed.

I am sure that Chuck was a excellent designer, as he was at other things he did.
